When Cameron Tucker was named the 2026 North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year in Track & Field, it was the culmination of a goal he had set for himself before the season even began.
“I knew I wanted to win Gatorade Player of the Year,” Cameron said. “It’s a really prestigious award. Nobody at my school had ever won it before, so I worked hard every day trying to make it happen.”
A graduate of Jay M. Robinson High School in Concord, Cameron capped off an outstanding high school career by earning one of the state’s highest athletic honors. This fall, he will continue his track career at the University of South Carolina.
Along with the award came a $1,000 grant that Cameron could donate to a youth sports organization of his choice.
For him, the decision was easy.
He chose the Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County.
Not because he lives in Henderson County. Not because he was asked.
He chose the Club because of his older brother, Carl Tucker Jr.
Carl serves as Athletic Director at the Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County, where he leads the Club’s athletic programming and introduces young people to the confidence, teamwork, and life lessons that come through sports.
Growing up, Cameron watched Carl excel on the football field, eventually earning the opportunity to play at the University of North Carolina. Before Cameron became one of the state’s top track athletes, he was the little brother in the stands watching Carl compete.
“I always wanted to be like him,” Cameron said. “Watching him play on those big stages made me want to work harder.”
Today, Carl’s influence extends far beyond the football field.
Cameron says watching his brother pour that same passion into the kids at the Boys & Girls Club made choosing where to donate an easy decision.
“I know he loves the kids over there,” Cameron said. “He puts a lot of effort into it. If he’s doing something, he’s going to give it 100 percent. That’s kind of where I get everything from.”
Carl says seeing his younger brother earn the award was special, but seeing him choose to invest in the Club made the moment even more meaningful.
“I’m extremely proud of him,” Carl said. “Not just because he won the award, but also because he thought about giving back. Knowing this is possible because of Cameron makes it even more meaningful.”
The donation will help purchase updated athletic equipment and support the Club’s participation in local Parks & Recreation leagues, giving more young people the opportunity to compete, grow, and build confidence through sports.
For Cameron, giving back is also personal.
He grew up playing football and basketball through his local Boys & Girls Club, where some of his earliest memories of sports were made.
“I played football and basketball through the Boys & Girls Club when I was little,” Cameron said. “Those are memories I’ll always have. I want these kids to have those same experiences and find the sports they love.”
That perspective is one Carl hopes every young athlete develops.
“It’s going to expand what we’re able to do for our kids,” Carl said. “We’ll be able to update equipment and give more kids the chance to compete. That’s what it’s all about.”
Although Cameron’s athletic résumé includes state championships, national-level competition, and now Gatorade Player of the Year honors, he says success comes down to a simple mindset.
“Have fun and work hard,” he said. “You’re not always going to be the best right away. Keep working because the hard work will pay off.”
Sports have taken the Tucker brothers on different journeys. One became North Carolina’s Gatorade Player of the Year and will continue competing at the collegiate level. The other now spends his days helping young people discover confidence through athletics.
Now their journeys have come full circle.
One brother earned the award. The other will use that gift to invest in the next generation.
Together, they’re proving that the greatest victories aren’t always measured by medals or championships. Sometimes they’re measured by the opportunities you create for someone else.
