The Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County proudly announces the launch of ¡Aprendamos! (“Let’s Learn!”), a new educational initiative open to all, designed to help Spanish-speaking youth and families thrive both academically and socially.
The program’s integrated structure includes:
- Daily Spanish-language instruction reinforcing core academic skills
- Targeted English literacy tutoring for K–5 students during critical reading development years
- Family engagement initiatives supporting bilingual learning at home
- ESL (English as a Second Language) accessibility across all Club programs
Developed in direct response to the growing need for accessible English-learning and academic support, ¡Aprendamos! represents the Club’s ongoing commitment to educational excellence in Henderson County.
Built on years of collaboration with Henderson County Public Schools, the program offers a Spanish-supportive classroom with individualized English tutoring and bilingual education. Together, these components are designed to bridge language gaps and strengthen the connection between home, school, and Club.
“I call it a club where we can connect and learn from each other,” said Miss Alex Contreras, program lead for ¡Aprendamos!. “Some members speak Spanish fluently, others are still learning, but everyone builds on each other’s fluency. It’s a space where they can share their day and learn together.”
Nearly 30% of Henderson County students identify as Hispanic/Latino, and many face barriers to achievement due to limited English resources.
“This program is all about helping students succeed now and in the future. When they arrive, they’re eager and excited to see Ms. Alex and join their classmates,” said Miss Araceli Huapilla, K-5 Unit Director. “Members have shared how ¡Aprendamos! has made them feel heard, valued, and supported by creating a safe space for learning. We focus on helping students learn while feeling comfortable and confident. Our lessons are taught in Spanish to ensure no one falls behind, while also emphasizing English to help them thrive in school and beyond. Learning bilingually gives them the strong foundation they need for a bright future.”
Even in its early stages, the new initiative is already building student confidence in both English and Spanish communication skills. “Some of our bilingual kids used to be nervous about speaking Spanish, because they thought they weren’t good at it,” Miss Alex shared. “Now they’re more comfortable using it and proud of it.”
With this early success, the program is continuing to develop opportunities that turn language into a bridge, not a barrier, helping students grow academically while celebrating their culture.
“We’re still growing and adding new ways to help our members practice reading and writing in Spanish,” added Miss Alex. “It’s exciting to see them come alive in a space where their language and culture are celebrated.”
