At the Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County, confidence grows in many ways. Often, it starts quietly.
That is why the Club invests in Triple Play, its comprehensive health and wellness program designed to build mind, body, and social-emotional strength through athletics and active play. More than a sports league, Triple Play creates a space where youth of all skill levels can grow in confidence and connection.
Carl Tucker, Athletics Director, has witnessed that growth this season.
“I have a couple of members that had some of those obstacles and fears when joining our basketball league,” Tucker shared. “Now, three weeks in, those members are excited and ready to play every day.”
One third grader began the season hesitant and reserved. During early practices, she stayed near the corner of the court and avoided the ball. Within weeks, she was calling for passes, smiling, and fully engaged with her team. She recently asked Tucker to tell her coach, Kara Corry, that she inspires her.
A sixth-grade member experienced a similar transformation. Known for staying within her close circle of friends, she joined basketball alone and unsure. After her first practice with coaches DJ Broadnax and Bryan Wright, she left the gym skipping and talking excitedly about the next practice.
This is the heart of Triple Play. Recognized as a cornerstone program of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, it uses athletics as a pathway to confidence-building and emotional growth.
“Being able to contribute to a member’s confidence and show them that they are capable of so much is an incredible feeling,” Tucker said. “Our staff make sure every child can learn and have fun, regardless of skill level.”
These stories are why the Club continues its mission with urgency in 2026.
Because Henderson County Needs More Club Kids… And Club Kids Need You.
Every child who walks into the gym unsure and walks out smiling is proof that when community support meets opportunity, confidence follows.
