About Us
At the Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County, we strive to be a place where every child feels a sense of belonging and safety. We are committed to providing a nurturing environment for nearly 1,000 youth in the Henderson and Buncombe County areas. Our goal is to empower kids to go beyond their classroom and achieve success in all areas of life. By offering a fun and secure space, a meaningful Club experience, and compassionate mentors, we are dedicated to helping young people discover their full potential and create a bright future for themselves.
Our mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
We are guided by these Core Values.
Self-Determination
We believe that every child is capable of greatness and has liberty to make choices that can lead to a better life. Our role is not to prescribe a path for young people, but to inspire and enable them to uncover their own unique strengths, gifts, and abilities.
Accountabiliy
We succeed or fail together; therefore we must work as a team. We value resolving differences with clear, direct communication and with a desire to contribute to the success of the broader team. We assume best intentions and are honest and accountable for our own mistakes.
Respect
Respect: Respect is the foundation of our work. We acknowledge the fundamental dignity and worth of each individual and treat all people with respect, regardless of differences.
Optimism
Serving young people is itself a hopeful act. We believe the best is possible for our youth, which inspires us to maintain a strong work ethic, actively engage in solving problems, and remain flexible during difficult periods.
Excellence
We believe that we serve youth in a window in which it is possible to meaningfully impact the arc of their lives. Because this opportunity is precious, we will not abide mediocrity and will hold ourselves and each other to the highest standards.
Our Story
In 1993, Tom and Sue Fazio recognized something missing in their community—a safe place for our children to go after school. With determination and the support of their loved ones, they founded the Boys and Girls Club of Henderson County in a small 2,000-square-foot community center in Green Meadows. What started as a modest effort to serve 75 kids a day and 200 children altogether has grown into something truly remarkable.
Today, the Club provides a safe haven for around 1,200 youth every year. With 19 classrooms spread across 7 recreational spaces in a new 61,500-ft building, the Club is now larger than ever before. Despite its growth, the Boys and Girls Club of Henderson County remains committed to its mission of helping the community’s youth grow and become responsible citizens.
