Mission Control

By Julia Hockenberry

Whenever I need a “mission moment,” I loiter in the lobby at the Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County, watching the action at the front desk. The front desk, innocuous in many businesses, is mission control for our very busy Club. When your mission boils down to inspiring young people to grow into productive, caring, responsible citizens, this is no small feat.

What's in a name?

I was seven years old, standing atop the playground slide and peering across the parking lot at every car that pulled in. The smell of picnic foods wafted through the air as I carefully examined the heads that popped out of each car. I was looking for RC. He was bald headed and most always chipper. He lived out of town but occasionally came to visit friends of my mom. I always looked forward to RC’s visits.
